Team Levels
This is a general overview of how we define team levels. Team level and age are the main factors when making the season schedule.
Tier 1
Can compete with nearly all teams on a state and national level.
Tier 2
Can compete with most teams in the state but would struggle against circuit teams.
Tier 3
Can compete in good tournaments but would struggle in higher level events.
Tier 4
Can compete is lower level local tournaments.
A few other factors in scheduling:
- Average family financial situation
- Other teams in the program (for example, if a coach has two teams at different levels, he may choose to enter them both in the same tournament in different divisions so he can coach both teams.)
- Pre-middle school teams will be far more likely to stay local even if they are good. There is a lot of good local competition at that age because most teams don't travel a lot pre-middle school.
Note: Most AAU teams are Tier 3-4 teams. Tier 2 teams often develop after playing together for a few years. As you will see below, teams that are near the top end of there tier will usually play better competition. At OP Elite, we would rather challenge our teams and lose some games then play against easy competition.
